Columbus, MN City Council
Columbus, MN City Council
Columbus has been an important part of my life, for my entire life. I was raised in Columbus township (back when it was a township) and attended Columbus Elementary. After graduation, I attended Minnesota State, Mankato where I graduated with a degree in in Social Studies education. I taught for several years in a north suburban district before ultimately deciding to work for my family's safety supply business. I obtained my MBA from the University of St. Thomas to help bolster my business skills.
In having my own growing family, I think its important that our citizens have wholesome representatives that care about our future, our present, and our past. I want to serve as a voice for my neighbors and community members, and feel I can add value as a council member.
Work with Anoka county to enhance roadways in Columbus, especially in areas with high volume traffic, like Lake Drive and Broadway. Creating turn lanes and/or passing lanes in high volume areas, and in areas near the elementary school, should be important for community safety.
I was involved in a serious accident in Columbus due to another drivers negligence in failing to stop behind me while I waited to turn after oncoming traffic passed. Our roadways are busier than ever and its important that as we grow, our infrastructure grows.
Review building plans for new developments thoroughly and create regulations that force mailed communication from the city in the event that a new development may disrupt residents within 1/2 mile radius. Allow for input from affected citizens.
Lets check in on the recently created position by our city council that removed our community officer, and replaced it with a city compliance officer. Is this costly position necessary for the cost? Can we better spend that money by reinvesting in a community officer or other position?
Review current city spending with sub-committees, like public works, and find ways to reduce overall operating cost. We have incredibly high taxes, and they increase exponentially each year. We need to be more cautious and conscious of our spending to ensure our taxes are being utilized and not wasted.
Work with current businesses in our community to ensure their needs are met and that they are willing to work collaboratively with the council when issues arise to reduce traffic and disruption, especially during construction times and on busy roadways.
Plan for new business growth with community in mind. Ensure the businesses moving to our community bring about the type of commerce and visitors that better our area.
A lot of residents still struggle without fiber-optic internet. With many people working from home, or running in-home businesses, and streaming television, its important that all citizens have access to adequate internet connection.
Columbus is a place that people choose to move to as it is generally safe and a good area to raise a family. Working to grow our parks and walking/biking paths will allow for families to have safe options for exercise. Many people walk our busy county roads, and many of our roadways do not have shoulders, creating dangerous situations for walkers and drivers alike.
